Born in Lugo, Spain, 13th of October of 1971. He began his career playing theatre and shorts, but he became to be known in Galicia (Spain) by his performance in TV Series Mareas Vivas (Galicia Television), which made him famous.

He was awarded as Best Lead Actor Goya Awards in 2004 for Take my eyes by Spanish Academy and Best Supporting Actor for Mondays in the sun (2002). 2009 Edition, he won Goya award for his performance in Cell 211.

He has worked with prestigious Spanish Directors as Jose Luis Borau, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, Joaquín Oristrell, Iciar Bollain, Fernando León de Aranoa, Daniel Monzón, Jaume Balagueró, Emilio Aragón, Daniel Calparsoro, Kike Maíllo, Ces Gay, Isaki Lacuesta or Julio Médem.

Also he has worked with international important directors as Michael Mann in Miami Vice (2006), Jim Jarmusch in Limits of control (2009) and Bernad Rose in Mr. Nice (2010).

In 2011 he received Gaudi Award as Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, (l'Acadèmia del Cinema Català) for his performance in the film Sleep Tight, directed by Jaume Balagueró, and also he was nominated as Best Lead Actor to several important awards as Goya Awards (Spanish Film Academy) or Jose María Forqué Awards (EGEDA) between others.

He participated in two important films released in 2012: Operación E, directed by Miguel Courtois, film that he produces and plays the lead, presented in San Sebastian Film Festival, and awarded as best actor by Biarritz Amerique Latine Film Festival, between other awards and nominations; and Una pistola en cada mano, directed by Cesc Gay, a great successful and awarded film, as the award at all cast of the film in Miami International Film Festival.

In April 2013, he presented his first work as a director, the documentary Cambia de papel (Change your role), co-directing with María Raimondez and Kutti Revathi, project that rise from his collaboration with de ONG Implicadas No Desenvolvemento in India.

Spring 2014 was released the film A night in old Mexico, directed by Emilio Aragón and starring Robert Duvall, a North American and Spanish coproduction, which closed 17 Malaga Film Festival (non official section) and was released in EEUU same year.

He repeats working with the director Daniel Monzón at the film The Kid (El Niño), winning Gaudi Award of Academia de Cinema Català and Mestre Mateo Award 2014 of Academia Galega do Audiovisual as best lead role. The film was released at august of 2014. After the great success and prestigious of Celda 211, this new film was at the top ten of Spanish box office from his first week in theatres, having good critics.

At the end of 2014 we could see him at theatres in two films: Shrew’s nest, horror film directed by Esteban Roel and Juan Fernando Andrés and produced by Alex De La Iglesia and at the comedy Murieron por encima de sus posibilidades, directed by Isaki Lacuesta.

He participates as actor and producer at the urban drama A cambio de nada (2015), first film of the director Daniel Guzmán, winner of 18 Málaga Film Festival.

September 2015 was in theatres the drama Ma Ma, first work with director Julio Médem, starring Penélope Cruz and Asier Etxeandía, and thriller Retribution, first film of the director Dani de la Torre.

He started this new year, 2016, releasing the bank robbery thriller, a coproduction Spanish-Argentine, Cien años de perdón, directed by Daniel Carparsoro, Jorge Guerricaechevarria’s script, produced by Morena Films and Vaca Films, which was at first top ten its first week in theatres.

At the beginning of May he presented at Malaga Film Festival (Spain) the thriller Toro, directed by Kike Maíllo, starring Mario Casas and José Sacristán.

He has starring the advertisement directed by Daniel Monzón, for the important bear brand VOLL-DAMM, Ad Campaign “Double or Nothing”, which has been a success.

He finish this year releasing the movie based in historical events titled1899: Los últimos de Filipinas, directed by Salvador Calvo and produced by Enrique Cerezo and TVE, with a great Spanish cast.

April 2017 it’s released the film Plan de fuga, a thriller directed by Iñaki Dorronsoro, and produced by LaZona Film and Atresmedia Cine. Also he will repeat collaboration with the director Daniel Monzón, in the film YUCATÁN, which will be shoot this year.  

Luis Tosar is part of the rock band music DI ELAS  (vocals, guitar and la harmonica) with Piti Sanz (guitar), Iván Laxe (bass), Suso Alonso (keys) and Ro Muñoz (drums).

In 2007, he created with his partner Farruco Castroman, the independent film and TV production company ZIRCOZINE, producing several successful films, supporting new directors and Galician Film Industry.
